Homemade Gifts for the Budget Minded

In Budget Smart Girl's Guide on December 8, 2011 at 3:57 pm

If you’re thinking about making a few homemade gifts this year…or just want to make something for yourself, here are some ideas and some sites I’ve stumbled upon-

Bath and Body Items

You know I’m a big fan of Woman’s World magazine and oftentimes they have ideas for making spa products at home. Check out the December 12th issue because they have lots of ideas like strawberry bath bombs. An added plus is you can e-mail the magazine and they’ll e-mail you some labels you can use on any of the homemade products.

More Homemade Spa Goodies

I saw this one last month and knew I had to bookmark it. Everything looks so good and something on my to do list for the New Year for myself-

Gift Wrap

For those of you remember me being featured a few years ago in the article about reusing items during the holidays you’ll know I keep gift bags every year. I can’t remember the last time I threw one away. However, if you want one that will last just about forever, check out this article about making your own-

Gifts Made By Children

Kids love making crafts anytime of the year but especially during the holidays and here’s a site with plenty of good ideas-

Place Setting Goodies

Here’s something I’ve been putting together for years and I place one on each person’s plate during a holiday meal. All it takes is some netting, some mini chocolate bars and twine. They’re also great for attaching to holiday cards or take home gifts for guests.

Homemade Hangers

I love padded hangers for sweaters and dresses but they can be pricey so I came up with my own. All you need are some wood or plastic hangers, some poly fill, leftover material…and if you want them to smell nice too, add some dried herbs, like lavendar. Anyone can make them. All you do is wrap the poly fill around the hanger with some of the herbs, then cut enough material to wrap around it and sew the sides together. Great as a gift or to keep yourself.

Last Minute Gift Ideas

In Budget Smart Girl's Guide on December 15, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Almost Christmas…I’m nearly done with my shopping, just the odd stocking stuffer gift or two left to buy. Whether you’ve run out of ideas or money, I always find some of the following gifts can save the day.

Cookies…homemade or not

First of all I just saw this great article on Yahoo-

http://shine.yahoo.com/event/holidaymoments/top-10-cookie-baking-secrets-2425023/

If making your own cookies is out of the question, try buying a few packages of readymade ones. Some chocolate, some shortbread etc. Mix and match them and then buy some of the boxes you get with your take out order at a Chinese restaurant. I’m seeing more of these boxes at places like Target, party supply stores and this time the year they come in greens and reds. Put the cookies inside and place a festive bow on the handle.

Tea

I’m a huge tea fan during the holidays it’s not only on sale but you can get Christmas flavored ones like eggnog and sugarplum spice. The box itself doesn’t look that exciting but it’s easy to find tins with Christmas scenes on them. You can even try combing the tea and cookies together.

Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy

One year it was a couple of days before Christmas and I still had a few gifts to buy and ran out of ideas and wrapping paper. Two places I headed to were Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy. They not only had things like bubble baths and perfume but some items were already wrapped in holiday packaging and weren’t that expensive.

Mittens and…

Seems we’re all in the deep freeze right now and I’m sure mittens or gloves will be appreciated. It’s one item that always seems to be on sale and at budget smart prices. I’ve often bought mittens and combined them with a container of hot cocoa.

Gift Cards

Lots of gift cards can be purchased for $5 or $10 and are perfect for last minute stocking stuffers. Best thing is most supermarkets carry them now. If you’re thinking of buying one, lots of companies also give you a gift card as a way of saying thank you, so pick some place or service you’d use yourself.

Books

One other thing you can pick up while you’re doing the holiday grocery shopping is a book. Most supermarkets carry bestselling paperbacks and often at a discount.

Games

This year most of the gifts we bought for everyone have come from Marbles, The Brain Store. It’s not only fun just to browse..and yes, they encourage you to try out the games while you’re shopping, but they have some games for under $10 that  make perfect last minute gifts or for slipping in the stocking. One I bought was called Story Cubes for just $9.99.

Thinking Ahead to Spring

If the gift recipient likes flowers or growing things, one item people really appreciate, especially in the dead of winter, is flower bulbs. Buy a flower pot, put a bag of potting soil and seeds or bulbs inside and they can get a headstart on their spring gardening. It’s also something nice to look at while the snow’s still on the ground.

Holiday Gifts for the Budget Savvy

In Budget Smart Girl's Guide on November 12, 2009 at 6:03 pm

I’m not sure if it’s all the catalogs landing in the mailbox or the ads on TV, but I decided to get a head start on buying this year’s gifts. One way to stretch you holiday budget is to make a few homemade gifts. Whether it’s food items or just something that costs around $5, here are some things that have worked for me.

Breads and Cakes
Instead of wrapping them in foil or cling wrap, buy an inexpensive tea towel, wrap it around the bread and tie the ends into a bow.

Gift Certificates
Not ones you buy, but the kind you put together yourself. You can make them on the computer, or even get your children to create some. Try giving an invitation to afternoon tea at your house complete with tea sandwiches, scones etc. Breakfast in Bed…always a nice gift for your spouse. Get out of Making Dinner card for someone who’s been under the weather. It also makes a nice gift for someone who’s taking care of someone who’s ill.

Mittens, Mugs and Cocoa
I was thinking about this while I was raking leaves and how welcoming it is to come inside and wrap your hands around a mug of hot cocoa. Give a cocoa mix along with a pair of mittens, you can also opt for dry soup mixes, or go with mittens, mix and a mug. Another idea is to put some cocoa mixes inside the mittens.

A Good Book
One of my favorite ways to pass a lazy Saturday afternoon during the winter is to curl up with a good book and something warm like a mug of tea. If you’re going to give someone a gift card from a bookstore, or just a book, why not include a box of tea, or even coffee.

Cookies
Everyone loves sampling holiday cookies, but try to think of novel ways to pack them. Maybe an old lunchbox, a Chinese restaurant takeaway box or if you have a lot of cookies to give to one family, a pizza box… just make sure it’s free of pizza sauce!

Indoor Garden
A year ago I won a set of candles that were stored in a really attractive canister. I kept thinking about what I could do with it and where I could display it. When summer rolled around I had my answer. I made holes in the bottom, filled it with soil and planted four different herbs in it. It sat on the patio table all summer long, supplying me with herbs for lots of meals. It might be a bit early for herb gardening, but look around for a decorative container or can. Buy a small bag of potting soil and put it inside, along with packets of various herb seeds ready for spring planting.

PB and J
How about the gift of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Not the actual sandwich, but a jar of peanut butter, jam, and a bread mix. Most companies are now making organic or natural PB and at budget friendly prices. If you’re a PB fan like I am check out this site for some ideas and for less than $7 you can buy a jar of gourmet PB. www.pbloco.com.

Car Emergency Box
This is something I’ve been thinking about putting together for my own car. Buy a file box or maybe you have one sitting around the house. Add a flashlight, some first aid supplies, maybe even a blanket, some energy bars etc.

Cream Cheese and Bagels

Here’s a cream cheese mix I made last week. It was so delicious I’ve not only been eating it on toast for lunch, I’m thinking it will make a great gift too. It’s simple to make and all you need is 8 ounces of cream cheese, about ½ cup of sun dried tomatoes that you’ve soaked in hot water. (I buy mine in the bulk bin section at the supermarket) and about 2 tablespoons of Italian seasoning mix. I used the Mediterranean Grinder Rub mix from The Spice Hunter www.spicehunter.com. Just put everything in a food processer and blend.
Other mixes I’m going to try are roasted red peppers and chopped garlic. Salmon and dill. And I also thought about a spicy mix using chili powder and cumin. Put the mix in a container, buy a package of bagels or a gift certificate to a bagel store and it’s an inexpensive but tasty gift.
