Ten Ways to Eat Organic Foods on a Budget

In Budget Smart Cook on April 6, 2011 at 5:18 pm

I have to say if I had my preference I’d opt to buy organic produce but sometimes the prices are twice as much as the regular variety. However, I have found some ways that you can buy organic foods even when you’re watching your money.

Local Farmer’s Market

Spring is here and summer’s just around the corner which means more farmer’s markets setting up shop for the year. These venues are some of the best places to buy organic produce and even other organic food items like honey. Best thing is the vendors are willing to give you a deal and you can buy in bulk and save more money.

Community Supported Agriculture

For an investment to a local organic farm you get produce delivered every week or biweekly. Check out www.localharvest.org/csa/

Bagged Produce

I’ve found that companies who sell organic foods in bags tend to offer better deals for  things like apples and kiwis.

Warehouse Stores

I used to have a membership at Costco and when I did one thing I really liked was the variety and price of their organic foods. Everything from field greens to apple juice.

Pick Your Own Farms

You’ll have to wait unti almost the end of summer to take advantage of this one but head to one of your local pick your own farms. You’ll sometimes find organic produce like strawberries and raspberries at lower prices because you do some of the work.

Internet

Supermarkets aren’t the only places to buy organic foods. I’ve found some good deals at places like Vitacost http://www.vitacost.com/ and Amazon www.amazon.com

Supermarket Brands

The store where I do the bulk of my grocery shopping has its own brand of organic foods. They taste great and sometimes aren’t that more expensive than their regular items. Everything from pizza to pasta sauce.

Grow Your Own

One of the cheapest ways to afford organic foods is to grow your own. Last year I grew organic peppers and tomatoes. You can either start them from seed or buy the plants. Two companies to check out are www.seedsofchange.com and http://www.gardensalive.com/search.asp?ss=seeds&x=16&y=5 But just about every DIY store now sells organic seeds and the prices aren’t as high as they were a few years ago.

Co-ops

One reason I take a trip to the local co-op is because of the great choice of organic foods. Something always seems to be on sale and once again if opt for bagged produce like apples and pears you can net a great bargain.

Bulk Bins

Head to the bulk bin section of the supermarket and you can always find some organic items for half the cost. Some of my favorites are organic oatmeal, beans and dried fruits.

Food Bargains…not just at the supermarket

Supermarkets aren’t the only places to find great food deals. I’ve been shopping at the following venues for years.

World Market
Where I live all the World Market stores are closing and I’ll be sorry to see them go. For years, they’ve been a source of great food deals for me. Everything from smoked cheeses to bargain priced spices that I can’t find anywhere else. Hopefully, I’ll be able to shop online when they close their doors. If you’re lucky enough to have one where you live and haven’t shopped there or just shopped there for furniture, check out their food section. www.worldmarket.com

IKEA
Yes, one of my favorite places for deals on organizing and kitchen gadgets, but did you know they have a Swedish food market nestled inside the store? You can find everything from gourmet cakes to breads and jams. www.ikea.com

Foods From Around the World
Okay, technically this is the supermarket, but last week while I was grocery shopping, I discovered a whole aisle of foods from countries around the world. As these are imported foods, I just assumed they were going to be more expensive. Some were, but others were great deals. Here are two items I found for around $2.50. The sun dried tomatoes were imported from Turkey and the chocolate spread from Israel. So don’t bypass foods in aisles labeled imported or ethnic, good deals can be found there.

Walgreens
Yes, I even found some great foods deals in my local Walgreens. Items like shredded cheese, pizza, Asian stir fry mixes. www.walgreens.com And don’t forget to check out other drugstores like CVS Pharmacy too.

Farmer’s Markets
With spring just around the corner, Farmer’s Markets will be opening for business. And it’s not just fruits, vegetables and bedding plants that are the best deals there. I’ve got some good buys on items like honey, bread and scones. Buy in quantity with some friends and you can net even bigger savings.

Co-ops
Okay, they’re really supermarkets, but sometimes they have better prices than mainstream stores.

Warehouses
I gave up my membership to my local Costco store a couple of years ago but when I see the prices of cheeses like mozzarella and feta at the supermarket, I often wonder if it would actually save me money to join again. Some items are big money savers there, things like milk, eggs, yes, even paper towels and toilet paper. So think about what you always buy in large amounts, how much you pay at the supermarket, and decide whether it’s worth the membership price.www.costco.com

Other Places to Shop
While I haven’t personally shopped any of the following venues, they’re definitely worth checking out.

Amazon
Yes, I once believed that Amazon just sold items like books and electronics, but a friend told me she did some of her grocery shopping there. You’ve got to be kidding right? No, seems they do sell foods and some can be purchased in bulk. Get together with a few friends who want the same item and maybe split the cost. www.amazon.com

The United Buying Club
I read an article about The United Buying Club in my local newspaper a few years ago. It featured a group of families that signed up for the program and claimed they were saving lots of money. If you buy natural and organic foods, this might be something to think about. www.unitedbuyingclubs.com

Bulk Buying
I can’t remember what I was searching for online, but this site popped up in my Google search. It’s a bit like shopping at a warehouse store without the price of membership…and without having to leave your home. www.buythecase.net

If anyone shops or has shopped at any of the above sites, I’d love to hear about it. Did you think the deals were good, would you recommend them?
